2. CREATE A BASE...
This is when you sit back and come up with the “want” list for the room.
The colour scheme needs to take shape, do you want light and airy or dark and dramatic?
Do your walls need a fresh coat of paint to make the design scheme work?
What kind of condition is the flooring in?
Area rugs are a great way to create zones and finish of a space, big impact with either pattern or colour.
What about existing furniture fabrics & colours? Do they work with the room?
3. CREATE THE COLOUR SCHEME...
The colour scheme includes the colours that you plan on bringing into the room. From paint, to rugs, drapes, lighting, furnishings, artwork, pillows, etc…
What is your accent colour going to be for the room?
How are you going to dress the windows?
Throw pillows? These can be solid or patterned, a great way to bring in your accent colour.
What about your furniture, do they work with the room? How can you add more accents of those colours to create balance?
4. CREATE YOUR STYLE IN THE DETAILS...
Now that you have come to this step, your room is probably already starting to look much better than before. The room has been refreshed, thought out and a plan is underway. Now it’s time to accessorize…
Do you have lot’s of “tchotchkes” and stuff to display? This is a great time to cut back and only showcase a few key items. Too much clutter is not relaxing.
Not sure about pillows? Look to the artwork…this can be a great way to find colour and patterns to jive with the room.

Baskets are great to hold throws and cozy blankets.
5. ONLY BRING IN THE THINGS THAT YOU LOVE...
Is there a piece that you are unsure of? You like it but it’s the wrong colour? It has sentimental value and you don’t want to throw it out.
Get creative…could it be spray painted? Or fixed? Or transformed into something else?
Surround yourself with art that you love, otherwise it will evoke bad feelings if you don’t.
Your style will be different than anyone else…use that as agift.
Do you have some art work that you don’t like? DON’T put it up.
Did you get a chair from a great aunt who passed on and you feel bad getting rid of it? Put it somewhere else.If you can’t find a purpose for something, or you don’t LOVE it…lose it.
Listening to your own internal compass will get easier over time, until then play around.
Always remember that there is no rush…you just get to keep building and building layers of you, in your home. Imagine how uniquely amazing it will look over time.
